the fort at Ban Viay there were 4 killed and 8 wounded in one company alone of the marine infantry. Three other companies. of the battalion were engaged that day, and cannot have escaped without lose. The Tur cos battalion suffered moat, having a total of 178 wounded. The Chinese losacs must have been proportionately heary. The number of Chinese engaged has not been ascertained with certainty. It has been estimated that the number of Chinese on the Chu ronte was 15,000, and the total number of those on the road to Langson has been variously estimated to be na low as 50,0:0 sud as high as 100,000, that is, including the large number of coolies required for carrying home the wounded.
General Briere de L'Isle will go from here down the Bac-le route to Hanoi, taking with him his brigade, or half the entire force. General Negrier will proceed to the frontier of China, bat, for the present there is no probability of his making au advance into China.
